To study philosophy is to grapple with questions that have occupied mankind for long, in conversation with some of the greatest thinkers who have ever lived. By examining speculative principles and accepted notions through a critical analysis, philosophy gives insights pertaining to our life and experience as a whole.
Many undergraduate students who take admission in philosophy course worry of their future. But the skills philosophy teaches one will always be in high demand – the ability to think and write clearly, the ability to bring to light unnoticed presuppositions, to explain complex ideas, to challenge conjectures, to see things in a wider perspective. Philosophy thus enhances analytical, critical and interpretive capacities that are applicable to any subject matter.
The department of philosophy started its journey since the inception of the college in 1965. To begin with philosophy as a discipline course in B.A. (Pass), the department introduced Honours course within a few years in 1970. Admission to post-graduate studies started in mid-80s. Presently the department also offers philosophy as an interdisciplinary subject to the students of other Honours courses.
The department encourages students to nurture their aptitude through conventional method of classroom lectures and tutorial discussions blended with modern technique of power point presentations. To incorporate expertise beyond the classroom and to facilitate interactions between the students and teachers, the department organizes lectures by eminent scholars at a regular interval.
The department has qualified young faculty members with a wide range of expertise. Keeping in mind the diverse background of the students taking admission in this course, the subject is taught bilingually. Among the students graduating every year, many pursue higher studies and some of them are teaching in different colleges of Delhi University. Other philosophy graduates are pursuing career in journalism, law, civil services, human resource management, fashion designing, advertising and in many other emerging professional fields in corporate sector as well.
